7A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

1)    I would like focus on the opportunity that comes from a lack of separate scooter trails in UF and many other schools.
2)    Colleges in the United States that have a large amount of the student body riding scooters on a regular basis do not have roads or trails specifically for scooters because it would require a large construction effort.

WHO: Owners of scooters/mopeds who wish to have a separate road from cars.
WHAT: Those who ride scooters are subject to danger and heavy traffic when they have to share the road with cars.
WHY: Separate roads for scooters would require a large disruption and construction on campus.

3)    Testing the who: This applies to college students with scooters, but there are also many non-students who ride scooters. This would also benefit those who drive cars by significantly reducing traffic around campus.
Testing the what: What vehicles would be allowed to use this road and how would there be a safe and efficient way to get in them from the road? The trails could accommodate motor vehicles that have a certain max speed to include vehicles like golf carts. As for entrance and exit from the road, there could be specific turn lanes from the road as well as entrances near scooter parking spots.
Testing the why: Some may be weary of the large construction project, but this is a prevalent enough issue to justify what would probably be just a summer session of construction.
4)    In my interviews, I tried to ask not only students but also local residents. I was surprised to hear one student think it wouldn’t help much with the traffic, but for the most part all of those whom I interviewed thought that separate scooter roads would ultimately benefit owners of scooters. The resident I interviewed was pretty indifferent about the idea, since she does not own a scooter or live very close to campus, but when I asked her if she would rather drive with or without scooters on the road, she said she felt much more content when it was just cars on the road because she feels like she needs to check her car’s blind spots “at least three times when [she] has to drive through UF.” When I asked if my interviewees thought the construction would be a huge disruption, the students just about unanimously agreed that it would not be, referencing the construction of multiple apartment buildings recently.

5)    After speaking to these people, I realize that a lot of people were unsure about the possibility of the idea. They think it sounds like a great idea in prospect but something that would be too huge to pull off. However, once I spoke to them about how the process would go and listed potential places throughout UF’s campus that would be good for scooter paths and reminded them how bad traffic can get, they warmed up a lot to the idea. I think the largest barrier to this opportunity is just people’s hesitation to accept the idea.

  1. Hey Megan,

I think this is a really good idea, so many students are injured in scooter related accidents and I believe that this will go a long way in keeping them safe. However, the amount of construction would probably be debilitating to the small streets of Gainesville. With so many two lane roads traffic tends to get pretty backed up, so the added construction may just cause more of a headache.

  2. hi Megan, I agree with your interviewees that it would be a huge idea to pull off. Honestly i think UF would be a better place with a lane for scooters since not only do they not know how to drive but also they go super slow and they stop traffic. Most of the scooter drivers get in an accident once a year. Ive been one of these people and trust me, it hurts. So i honestly think if you have an idea of how to contrusct a lane just for scooters it would be a great investment to make for UF.

I think my favorite experience with this class is the interactive nature of it. If we weren’t in the small groups, we wouldn’t have had the chance to see each other’s ideas evolve and grow. It was nice to have a few specific ideas that we could follow along with our own. I don’t think of myself as an Entrepreneur quite yet, but I do think I have a different perspective on things. To those who come into the course, I would say be creative in your posts. The more you invest in your posts, the less it will seem like an assignment and the more it will seem like something you’ve created.

25A What's Next?

Existing Market: 1.      What’s Next: There will be no service workers that actually work in the field. The only workers would work in an office or in a remote location where people could purchase details or go for customer service. I would also need to heavily market the product and work on pricing. 2.      After the interviews, I learned from my interviewees that they would prefer a better pricing option than that of UF or Gainesville parking decals. They agreed that, with a product like this that would significantly improve their everyday life, they would be willing to pay a decent amount of money similar to that of UF’s, but would like an option for monthly or quarterly pricing. 3.      For the future, I think the plan would need to focus on improving the current, most similar service, parking. Decals are very present on this campus and I wouldn’t want to introduce something too drastically different than what peop...

My product/service would solve the issue that there aren’t separate roads for scooters in places such as the University of Florida where there are many people who ride scooters every day. This issue not only poses danger but also causes a lot of traffic and makes what should be a five minute commute take 30 minutes. To solve this problem, I would offer a service that constructs roads specifically for smaller vehicles in a place with a lot of walking traffic, such as the UF campus. There would be specific decals for purchase that would allow people to ride scooters or smaller vehicles on the path as well as crosswalks for pedestrians. These could be used with UF parking decals and would attract both students and faculty. It would also benefit drivers because there would be fewer scooters on the road.
